The vision of Habitat for Humanity is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The mission statement is: "Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity bring people together to build homes, community, and hope!" This mission is accomplished primarily through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, to build and rehabilitate houses for families in need of affordable housing. It is meant to be a hand-up, not a hand-out, in that the new homeowner is asked to spend a significant number of hours working on his or her new home and will be asked to repay a non-interest-bearing loan for the cost of the home.


The DuPage affiliate of Habitat for Humanity (DHFH) was established in 1995 to provide decent housing to those in need who either reside or work in DuPage County, Illinois. Headquartered in Wheaton, IL, the affiliate has served over 110 families since its inception and has plans to grow in capacity to serve over 40 additional families per year.

DHFH operates under the umbrella of HFHI, but is solely responsible for funding its operation, choosing partner families, constructing, or rehabbing homes and ensuring the success of its partner families in DuPage County.

In March of 2020, Chicago South Suburbs (CSS) affiliate merged with DuPage Habitat for Humanity. Since then, both affiliates have been working in tandem to provide affordable housing for Chicago South Suburban families.

Position Summary

This is a full-time, exempt position, responsible for gathering and reporting the financial position of DuPage and Chicago South Suburbs Habitat for Humanity, DuPage and Chicago South Suburbs Habitat ReStores to the Executive Director and the Finance Committee in an accurate, complete and timely manner. Experience in or the willingness to learn job costing, thrift retail, mortgage servicing and lending, nonprofit and government accounting is all helpful to be successful with this position



Communicate with timeliness, clarity and positivity with people of all levels

Develop and maintain positive, collaborative functional relationships with staff, volunteers, donors and vendors

Train and engage volunteers to consistently and effectively support with bookkeeping tasks


Maintain positive relationships with all staff

Provide monthly current and forecasted organization's financial position to the Executive Director and Finance Committee

Create internal financial controls, best practices and retail analysis for the Director of Retail

Prepare monthly house construction cost analysis for Executive Director and Director of Construction

Provide monthly financial recap for the senior leadership team and Finance Committee and board Treasurer

Provide quarterly dashboard to treasurer and finance committee

Collaborate with Community Engagement, Development, Retail, Administration and Construction regarding implementation of best practices; staying within established budgets and guidelines and streamlining processes

Lead the annual budget process and work with Executive Director to control costs and stay in budget

Direct the annual financial audit and 990 Informational Tax Return preparation Ascertain if organization financial policies require creation, implementation or updating

Review monthly journal entries with Executive Director

Prepare or review monthly account reconciliations prepared by Accountant or volunteer with Executive Director

Prepare or approve monthly cash transfers between various operating and savings accounts

Monitor the monthly and annual financials of affiliated ReStores and create adjusting journal entries as needed

Calculating and recording year end accruals

Responsibility to record inter-company transactions and activity on parent's books

Thorough understanding of net present value concepts


Review mortgage servicing and origination processes and reconciliation of mortgage servicing software to accounting software

Maintain a positive relationship with 3rd party loan servicing department

Record 3rd party loan repurchases or swaps

Record foreclosed, modified or repurchased mortgages

In cooperation with the Director of Homeowner Services, assure organization maintains current mortgage-related practices with federal regulations

Maintain productive relationship with third party mortgage-related financial institutions

Reconcile monthly 3rd party mortgage and escrow transactions in QuickBooks with Homeowner Services

Work with financial brokerage company regarding leverage of mortgage portfolio Record sale of mortgages to third party institutions

Manage cash flow and maintain accurate forecasts of organization's cash position


Provide required monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and remittances to financial institutions

Produce combined monthly financial statements and budget to actual variance report to the Finance Committee and executive leadership team by the 10th of following month

Coordinate with the board treasurer and report financial activities and needs to the Finance Committee the third Monday of every month

Create monthly and quarterly cash flow reports for executive leadership team use STANDARDS FOR MEASURING PERFORMANCE

Completeness, accuracy, and punctuality of reports and other assignments

Ability to obtain an unqualified opinion on auditing financial statements

Ability to meet or exceed accreditation standards regarding mortgage origination and servicing in partnership with the Director of Community Engagement

Maintain a high internal and external customer satisfaction level

Maintain high standards of integrity and compliance

Bachelor's or Master's in accounting

At least four years of supervisory experience in a management position supervising staff of two or more

Nonprofit experience preferred; job costing experience helpful

Intermediate to advanced experience with MS Office Suite with focus on Excel

Experience with data entry and databases required

Experience with QuickBooks Pro preferred

Experience in working with volunteers strongly preferred

Good organizational skills

Excellent interpersonal communication and team building skills

Ability to prioritize and work independently; self-starter and self-motivator; proactive Solid background in applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as they relate to not-for-profit entities


Most work is performed indoors

Mobility required as files, volunteers and staff are in various offices throughout DuPage County and Chicago South Suburbs

Requires valid driver's license and ability to meet company's insurance requirements, occasional driving

Long periods of time sitting at a computer entering and analyzing data

Some tasks involve working with volunteers and staff, while other tasks are performed independently in a quiet setting

Must be able to pass background, motor vehicle and credit reviews
