Job Id: 802 # of Openings: 1 Director, Center for Vocation and Career Job Overview Reporting to the Senior Director for Vocation and Alumni Engagement, the Director of the Center for Vocation and Career leads the work of preparing Wheaton students for their futures following their Wheaton experience. From vision casting to staff management to budget responsibilities, the Director oversees all efforts of the office to achieve goals for graduate success. To that end, the Director invests in cross-campus relationships to expand the career ecosystem beyond the walls of the CVC. -The Director leads efforts to nurture purposeful relationships with employers, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and student leaders, providing resources and experiences that help students use their Wheaton College education to serve Christ and His Kingdom throughout their lifetimes. This person oversees a staff of nine and directly supervises four positions: two associate directors, the events and marketing coordinator, and the office coordinator. Duties and Responsibilities Leadership - Casts a vision for the journey students should experience as a part of their Wheaton tenure. Determines goals, priorities, budget and staffing needs, and activities to achieve desired vocational preparation for our students. Identifies ways to measure outcomes. -Ensures team clearly understands their roles, feels supported, receives strong professional development, and grows in their understanding of how to serve all students, particularly racially-ethnically diverse students, First Generation students, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. -

  • Engages with leaders across campus to support the work of the institution and gain support for the work of the CVC. Identifies institutional priorities related to career and vocation and collaborates with colleagues to achieve those priorities, including fundraising, identifying on-campus partners, and operating within the structure of the institution. -
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the team, including structure, personnel, compensation, titles and job descriptions, to ensure students are being served well based on identified metrics for data-informed decision-making. -
  • Endeavors to build staff longevity to reduce turnover, gain professional competence, and develops ongoing student and faculty relationships.
  • Understands the entry-level hiring environment to ensure we are giving the best advice and most strategic offerings for students. Supports a strong employer connections function based on best practice research, engaging with alumni and other partners to ensure students are being prepared for opportunities in industries and geographies of interest to students and where job growth is occurring. -
  • Challenges and equips team to pursue and embrace the most effective ways of serving students, while attending to budget and staffing limitations. Seeks out best practice approaches to the delivery of career education to students and alumni, including increased content generation, introducing new technology and vendor solutions, initiating innovative programs that reflect the changing economy and job market to increase and enhance Wheaton's leadership position in vocational discernment and career exploration.
  • Utilizing best practice research, creates opportunities to increase engagement with, and service to, racially-ethnically diverse students, First Generation students, and other underserved students to ensure equity in their career development. Communication
    • Collaborates with academic deans, department chairs, and faculty colleagues to identify ways to expand the career ecosystem beyond the CVC. Provides data on student learning of liberal arts skills, leading conversations in the classroom, sharing data on First Destination outcomes with faculty, and developing content for faculty to enhance both their learning objectives and the goals of the CVC.
    • Leads marketing and data staff members in developing materials, including annual report and outcomes data presentations to be used by Admissions and Athletics for recruiting and Development for donor relationship building. -
    • Represents the CVC at on-campus events including Orientation, Admissions events, Family Weekend, reunions, meetings of Boards and Councils, and strategic faculty meetings.
    • Implements and inspires a philosophy of vocation and career that grows out of the distinctly Christian concept of calling, the liberal arts tradition, the College's mission and vision statements, and best practices in higher education. - This job description is intended to represent key areas of responsibilities; specific assignments may vary from time to time, and other duties may be assigned. Qualifications
      • Bachelor's degree (ideally, liberal arts) required; M.A. in related field preferred
      • Five+ years of management experience, ideally involving professional engagement with liberal arts students or recent college graduates, with a demonstrated ability to lead a team
      • Commitment to and skill in strategic planning, goal setting, visioning, project management, innovation, communication, teaching methods, and implementation
      • Experience developing diversity, inclusion, and equity programming for under-represented populations
      • Excellent public speaking, writing, and communication skills
      • Knowledge of the academic environment, experiential learning best practices, career education best practices, and the entry-level employment market strongly preferred
